Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City

Liverpool’s title hopes suffered a major dent against Manchester City at Anfield.

City had swept into the lead early in the second half when former Reds striker Craig Bellamy’s shot took a wicked deflection off Alvaro Arbeloa and curled beyond Pepe Reina.

Dirk Kuyt grabbed his ninth goal of the season to save a point with 12 minutes left, but the draw leaves Liverpool seven points behind table-toppers Manchester United.

Still have hope ?

Fulham 2-0 West Bromwich Albion

Two second-half goals gave Fulham a deserved victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Bobby Zamora finally ended his long barren streak as Fulham condemned rock-bottom West Brom to a one-sided 2-0 defeat.

Zamora had played more than 29 hours of Barclays Premier League football since his last goal but tapped home the opener from point-blank range before strike partner Andy Johnson added his ninth of the season in all competitions to seal a well-earned victory.

The home side struck the woodwork on four separate occasions as they ran riot with Clint Dempsey, Brede Hangeland and, on two occasions, Danny Murphy the men to miss out, while Roman Bednar missed an injury-time penalty for the visitors.

Newcastle United 0-0 Everton

Ten-man Newcastle United earned a point against Everton at St James’ Park.

Kevin Nolan owed a huge debt of thanks to his Newcastle team-mates as they fought their way to a precious point from a 0-0 draw with Everton after he had been sent off.

The midfielder saw red for an ugly 43rd-minute lunge at Victor Anichebe just as his side had recovered from a blitz by the visitors which saw goalkeeper Steve Harper save from Joseph Yobo and youngster Jack Rodwell.

Peter Lovenkrands and substitute Jonas Gutierrez both went close for the Magpies either side of half-time, but the teams could not be separated with honours finishing even.

This was not a good day for Everton who saw Mikel Arteta taken off with a serious looking knee injury early on.

Sir Alex Ferguson (Reuters)

NO COUNTING CHICKENS

“You can never be dead sure, but it’s safe to say that Chelsea have an uphill fight now to overcome us. Things can happen, though. We were 12 points clear of Arsenal one season, 1997-98, and we lost the league.”

– Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson warning his supporters not automatically assume that his side will win the Premier League Championship

Chelsea still have hope to win this season title.

Game reviews

Aston Villa 0-1 Chelsea

Nicolas Anelka scored the only goal as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park.

Guus Hiddink celebrated his first match in charge of Chelsea with a victory, but it was not without its trials and tribulations.

Anelka’s 21st goal of the season was all that separated the sides, allowing Chelsea to leapfrog Martin O’Neill’s team into third in the race for Champions League football next season.

But Ashley Young struck the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick in the 34th minute before Villa dominated the second half, only to fall short in their bid to salvage a point, suffering their first Barclays Premier League defeat for 14 matches.

Bolton Wanderers 2-1 West Ham United

Bolton Wanderers secured a home victory against West Ham United but they were left with their nerves stretched.

Matt Taylor and Kevin Davies put them firmly in the driving seat at the Reebok Stadium with both goals scored in the opening 11 minutes.

West Ham responded superbly but had only Scott Parker’s goal in the 66th minute to show for all their possession.

Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland

Arsenal played out their third successive 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League.

Andrei Arshavin’s debut failed to help Arsenal conjure up a goal as they played out another frustrating draw at the Emirates Stadium.

The Russian saw an early low shot fly just wide, before Marton Fulop beat away his angled drive.

Sunderland battled well and were worth a share of the spoils as the Gunners again could not break down a stubborn defence and missed a chance to close the gap on the top four.

Manchester United 2-1 Blackburn Rovers

Manchester United increased their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League with this victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning second-half free-kick was enough to give United victory after Blackburn Rovers had ended their record 1,334-minute run without conceding a Barclays Premier League goal.

Roque Santa Cruz was the man who did the damage, rounding Tomasz Kuszczak after Edwin van der Sar had been rested to tap home and level Wayne Rooney’s opener.

But Ronaldo had saved something special for the occasion too, whipping home a brilliant free-kick which had too much pace for Paul Robinson to put United eight points clear and keep Rovers in the bottom three.

Stoke City 2-2 Portsmouth

Portsmouth snatched a 2-2 draw against Stoke City in an exciting final 15 minutes.

A poor match exploded into life when Niko Kranjcar put the visitors ahead in the 75th minute.

However, James Beattie equalised from the spot when Glen Johnson was ruled to have handballed before Beattie’s header put his side ahead, only for Hermann Hreidarsson’s deflected injury-time shot to earn the draw.

Middlesbrough 0-0 Wigan Athletic

Middlesbrough’s draw with Wigan Athletic stretched thier unbeaten league run to 14 matches.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate watched in agony as Gary O’Neil saw an 86th-minute drive deflected to safety off keeper Chris Kirkland’s legs as the visitors hung on in a match marred by a serious-looking injury to Didier Digard.

Digard was stretchered off in the 16th minute after a challenge by former Boro midfielder Lee Cattermole.
